Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
OS: Win XP Pro SP3

Problem: Hi Def Audio device appears in Other Devices, as problematic and has no driver installed. Sometimes it shows up as a generic PCI Device.

I'm not certain, but I'm guessing this device entry points to the onbard sound chip or is something intrinsically related to it. Either way, I don't see why it's being listed in my config at all, as it's been BIOS disabled. If it is a separate device, then I still have a problem of getting its drivers working.

I've run through the Xpress install from the Giga mobo disk which got me to the identified but non-functional/driverless entry in the hardware list. I've followed a supposed solution on Giga's site to resolve a FAQ issue as to why the drivers aren't installed correctly for the onboard sound even for some who want to use it (ref: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Sup...Model.aspx?FAQID=2538). I tried that solution already figuring if I could get it recognized I might be able to get rid of it. Well, that just switched it from an identified funky entry to an unidentified "PCI Device" entry. Useless.

Another issue has to do with crackling/popping from my sound. This only seems to happen when using Digital I/O, and occurs with or without sound actually playing. I wanted to get this broken device out of the way to remove it as a possible culprit (or be able to blame it) wrt the noise.

I've tried suggestions to disable the pri/sec ide channel and allow redetection and, swapping in latest JMicron IDE drivers, to no avail. Next thing is to try a latency tool in case the PCI slot is having a conflict with the vid card's latency, though that seems to bear more on stuttering sound than just noisiness.

So that's where I stand now. Anyone have a sound card in their UD3R (or UD3P, I guess), working cleanly and without a bogus PCI device in their hardware list?

Thanks for any help.

There's the problem. You disabled onboard sound in the bios but, then loaded a driver with the express install thus making an entry into the registry hence, the listing in device manager. Delete the driver and then remove the device.

I do question though, whether this unneeded driver and registry entry is causing the crackling noises.

You don't happen to have an recent generation ATI graphics card installed? If so it could be that you need the HDMI audio driver installed for it.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

MTB: Are you referring to the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio? That's the driver that Giga's "help desk" said to remove in the article I linked in the OP, so I assume so. The issue here, is that there is no specific onboard audio driver explicitly mentioned as being installed during the Xpress install. This is what's listed, and what I installed one by one (minus the Google search thingy): DES, INFUpdate Utility, Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC Driver, Gigabyte SATA and RAID driver.

The Realtek entry above seems potentially suspicious, but the description says fairly clearly: "Realtek LAN Driver for Gigabit." Could this UAA driver be coming from the XP install itself? I also wonder why it keeps coming back after I disable/uninstall both.

SR: Ummm...why yeeesss, I do: HIS Radeon 4850 IceQ....blah blah blah card. I'll look for the HDMI driver, as you suggest. I hope that's it, since it fits so nicely. As an aside, I also notice that the sound from my front panel headphone jack, which is connected to the HD audio header on the X-Fi card, exhibits interference during HDD access (at least). I've decided to get an extension to plug my headphones jack into the backplate of my X-Fi card, since the sound is clean even without anything playing. *shrug* Fun.
