help with slow LAN file transfer

Is there a reason why my laptop won't send a file over a lan at faster than 15 kb/sec? lol .. i have a dell inspiron w/ p3 700 running win ME and a PCMCIA ethernet card from Linksys which uses a media coupler. From the internet (dsl) it will download at good speeds comparable to other computers on the LAN, but network send/receive is incredibly slow.. Any help would be appreciated

Well....... Whats the Laptop connected to? Switch? Hub? Directly to the router or DSL Modem? What protocols are you running? What are you transferring from?

The computers are all in the same hub. I have tried both netbui and tcp/ip protocols on the laptop, but file transfer in both directions between laptop and desktop systems is very slow. Between other systems in the lan, file transfer is still very quick.

your LAN card on your Laptop is bad. replace it. or uninstall all your network protocols and reinstall them and check if the problem is the same. if it is, i would get a new Lan card for your laptop

Check to see that you have all the updates from MS for ME, and check with the maker of your NIC to see if they have any driver upgrades.

Check the LEDs on the hub/switch. Do a file download from the Internet, then download a file from one of the other machines on the LAN. If it's a hub, there'll be "collision" LED, if that's lit up alot, chances are someone (like the box you're downloading from)has full duplex selected, which is a bad thing when connected to most hubs.

If you really have a switch, then check the other LAN computer's NIC settings. It may not be playing well with the "autoconfigure" feature on the switch for speed & duplex. Manually set the speed & duplex to 10 half, then try a download. If that works, take it to 100/half, if that works, try 100 full. After you've changed the speed & duplex settings, disconnect the computer from the hub/switch for a bit, then plug it back in.

Good Luck
