Help with simple question on extending wireless range

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

When it comes to networking, I am definitely a novice, but I have flashed dd-wrt onto my current router, a Cisco wrt320n and flashed Tomato onto my old router, a Buffalo whr-hp-g54.

My question is, what is the best way to extend my wireless signal given my equipment? The wrt320n is in the basement where the cable modem is (and various other connections, so it needs to stay there) and is at one end of the house, but the majority of wireless device usage is upstairs, on the other end of the house, which is about 140ft across.

I assume I can position the still working Buffalo router on the side of the house where the usage is to use as a repeater or bridge (I have seen these terms, but don't understand the difference). If this is correct, should I run a network cable between the 2 and then have the Buffalo broadcast wirelessly or is it easier to just have the Buffalo receive and rebroadcast without using a cable? Using a cable is no problem since the basement is unfinished.

If all this is correct so far? What settings do I need to change on my Buffalo router to make it work correctly in it's new, non-primary router role.

Again, thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
