Hi guys...I just built a new computer, but I'm experiencing some nasty problems.

Here's a short overview of the system:

ATI Radeon 64 meg vivo
Shuttle AK31A 3.1 with latest bios
Athlon XP 1600+
Crucial 2100 256 ddr ram
30 gig Western Digital
Aureal Vortex 2

I think that pretty much covers it...anyway, I put it all together, and windows installs and everything, but the aureal vortex card caused the comp to crash once I installed the drivers for it. Also, I tried putting a NIC card in, but that also froze the comp. I didn't think sound was a big deal, so I gave up on trying to fix the aureal, but the NIC card (Network Everywhere NC100 v2) just did not want to work.

I ended up buying a brand new one just to see if that was the problem. I installed it, and the NIC card (D-Link DFE-503TX) was detected and everything, but for some reason it does not want to connect to my dsl service at all...it doesn't even detect it.

I tried the new nic card on a different computer with the same exact tcp/ip and other network settings, and it detected the dsl line....this has confused me a great deal. I just don't understand how the adapter is talking to the dsl modem, yet does not show the connections available. I'm using RASPPPOE to try to connect btw. I've done this a million times, and never has something so weird happened.

I am completely stumped. There are no device conflicts in windows, I tried fail-safe boot, different pci slots, re-flashed the bios, set manual irq's in the bios, and a whole slew of other stuff. What more could I possibly try? Could it be defective?

Thanks for your help...give me any ideas, I'm about to RMA this punk mobo....:(

Hi,

My system is hardly a week old. I am using the latest bios [AK31S20f], supposed to be for detecting XP on my AK31 v2.0 mobo , on an OEM Athlon XP1800+ with 512MB of DDR RAM. Initially for first few days it posted my cpu fine but now the bloody thing shows my athlon xp1800+ as Mobile AMD Athlon 1700+

I am so pissed off. I tried clearing CMOS. Formatted the whole drive. repartitioned everything. I even removed my Hard Disk to just see processor speed in BIOS. Trying flashing back to the original bios and then to the latest one. STill no solution. The bloody machine wont show my pc as 1800+ it insists on BIOS level that my PC is 1700+. I tried the default optimized settings on BIOS, no improvement, then i tried tweaking stuff then again no results. I am so stressed with this only week old system.

I tried manually adjusting the multiplier to 11.5 but the idiot forces it back to 11 and for some reason there is problem in FSB too..When i look at the FSB at bios it says 133MHZ when i go into Sandra or WCPUID it says its 133.9 and incorrect. I am so friggin pissed off. The shuttle support team is so crap they wont even reply to my constant emails. Not even a consolatory auto reply. I have sent two emails and 4 days have passed. No reply. I am really very depressed because i ordered this system specifically all the way from across the continent [usa] and now its behaving unlike what the reviews bragged about.

Please help me. I hope someone has the answers for me....Also i want to tell u that my motherboard says it has Phoenix Bios D686 chip whereas the new bios flash that is posted on shuttle website for the motherboard is Award. I am very confused so please help me.

Thanks.
Farid

Also i would like u to see the wcpuid results of my system as follows.

Well, I finally got the NIC card working...I cleared my cmos and reset everything and my nic card finally registered and got on-online. Now my problem is that it crashes everytime it starts a fast download, or has to load a page with multiple downloads. I think it's a hardware conflict but I'm not sure since I don't see any...sigh.

I guess you could try re-seating the cpu, farid.

Hey farid, seeing as you're new here let's clue you in to how things work - don't post your question in every thread that has a vaguely similar topic! Make your own topic, and use that to get the answers. Posting in other people's threads with hugely long questions about a motherboard of a different version is a sure way to irritate people.

MooMan -

I set up a machine w/AK31A, same Radeon card, same D-Link NIC, same RAM, and same HD, except used on board sound and Athlon 1.4 tbird. Had no problems at all for the past 5 weeks.

What OS are you using?

I'm using Win98SE, Workin'. I also tried ME. I use on-board sound now too as well. Changing a few bios settings resulted in the comp being able to get online and load very small pages, but as soon as a big download starts up, or a graphic intensive page loads, I get a windows protection fault "You must restart your computer" message, or it just freezes.

I was using Windows Me, but not with a broadband connection. Sounds like something is screwy with the software, not a defective hardware problem.

If I think of anything that might help, I'll let you know.

Farid, if you can rma the board, I would exchange it for the version 3.1. Had mine a month with no major problems. Running at 145 fsb with conservative memory timings.

MooMan,
Have you tried reseting the BIOS, and starting over again? I would imagine that you've probably dumped alot of time into this already. If I was in your shoes, I'ld go ahead and RMA it.

Farid,
It looks like the problem is possibly with a setting in your BIOS. I had the same problem when I first got the board. Check the CPU Clock setting in your BIOS, and set it accordingly.

Also like Workin' said, you will want to post your own topic next time.

Yup yup yup.....reset everything and started over. I contemplated it being RASPPPOE, my connection software, so I made my dsl modem connect with it's built in PPPOE system, and it still froze. I do believe I'm going to RMA it now. :(
