Help with setting up an FTP server

Hi

I was just planning to setup an FTP server at home for the fun of it. Well I like to hear some input from those people out there who have an FTP server up and running.

Tell me your machine spec. and OS used.

Thanx in advance

Mulla, there's a lot of options available for FTP server.

If you're running win9x, you are better off installing 3rd party software such as Serv-U FTP.

If you are running win2K, or unix, an ftp server is already built in. Just learn how to configure it. It's not that hard

for just a private FTP machine specs dont really matter that much (if it is good enough to run the software, it will do). like eer said, use the built in server if you have one of those OS's or if your just running win98/me for example use a 3rd party FTP server. i would recommend G6 FTP Server. it is one of the most pwerful FTP servers, and also one of the easiest to set up.

Serv-U is very easy to set up and has all the necessary features you need. Excellent program in my opinion.

Thanx for all the input. I already have W2K up and running and will play around with it to try and "learn myself" how to get it setup.

I've used IIS4's FTP, was OK but I was also using Serv-U at the time too which I think is much better. Easy to use and quite powerful if you want it to be.

I haven't had an ftp server for a while now....but I used to have one on my computer at a friend's house on his line (pretty fast cable modem).

There were times when we had 30 or so users logged in at the same time.

First we tried serv-u, and that couldn't do everything we wanted.

Then we tried Warftpd. That worked great, and it's customizable w/ the macro's. Has upload verification, tons of options, setup, customizable, and best of all, what I liked best - groups!

Now I hear of this g6 ftp server. I think it's probably the best, from what I hear - has resume upload, which other ftp servers don't have. I haven't used this yet, but if I ever think of having an ftp again, I will be using that one for sure.

You might also want to try vermillion ftp, and the built in one for win2k / nt if you have NT. I also heard that IIS is the best, since it does FTP, http, news and mail all in same single server - a brilliant invention.

Serv-u is $30 to $40 i think, g6 ftp - i am not sure, and warftpd, as stated above, is freeware at www.jgaa.com.

Hope you find the one that works for you!
