Help With Setting Up A Basic Network

I am trying to set up a basic network between my 2 computers. I also need to share ethernet between these computers. Researching, i have found 2 options that (I think) might work...

1) connect the computers with a crossover cable, and thats it...the internet can be shared through that cable somehow...

2) buy a hub....put 2 nic's in one computer, and one in the other...

I kind of want to go with a hub...do i need 3 nic's total? Why can't i just have my internet going into my hub...and then 2 cables going from the hub to my computers (2 nic's total)...Will the computers not be able to share files then?

Thanks for any help...

Edit: Oh yeah, do i need an Auto Sensing hub? workgroup hub? anythign special like that?

I'd seriously consider going with a broadband router like the SMC Barricade. it provides a built in configurable NAT based firewall, a print server, and a modem server for when broadband might go down. It can serve as your network hub, and eliminate the need for 2 NICs in one machine. You can also place a hub or switch behind it. I've seen it for as low as 49.95 over in the hot deals forum with rebate. Go do a search over there.
