Help with Satellite wiring

I want to get a directivo unit for my apartment. The apartment is wired for directv using one dish on the top of the unit and each apartment is supplied with only one connection. Since the directivo unit has dual tuners, is there a way i can split that one connection so i can get the benefits of having two tuners?

Please help!
 
yeah, you need to buy a splitter. but it has to be the special kind. The splitter's box will tell you. They are very expsensive. Mine was around 80 bucks.
 
and I diplexer allows you to hook 2 receivers to 1 satellite cable drop? Have you tried this? If so, that's great news.
 
It will let you tune to two channels IF they use multiplexers for the LNBs to run one cable to everyone. Then you use a diplexer to split it into two cables.
 
arg... Ya.. for the directivo... it needs to have 2 different channels to record 1 show, while watching another.
 
Codewiz, so if the apartment uses a multiplexer to send the cable to everyone, then a diplexor will work to split the signal into 2 seperate signals to allow two seperate channels?

It should. At least the way I have seen apartment complexes use Directv. But without seeing the exact setup, I can't say for certain.
 
Ok, I am a DirecTV / DirecWay Installer.

Short Version: no, you have to have 2 "home runs" from the dish to the receiver.

Long Version (Technical) No, the way directv cuts down on interference is to have 1/2 of the "transponders" using "Left-hand Polorization" and half using "Right-hand Polorization". Problem is the receiver "selects" one or the other by sending 13 volts for LHP and 18 for RHP therefore making it impossible to do both at the same time. In theory you could get lucky and use a single side power passing splitter and if you were watching 2 shows (both LHP or both RHP) you could do it, obviously not a good solution though.

1. Diplexers are for Cable/Antenna and satellite on the same line, the signal for the C/A side is lower (5 - 900 Mhz) and the satellite is higher (1000 - 2150 Mhz) with only the satellite side passing power (C/A is unpowered).

2. Splitters will not work, see "long version"

3. Multi-switch still needs 2 lines (one for 13 volts (LHP) one for 18 volts (RHP) )
