About pronunciation. The way I was first taught Russian cyrillic, ? was pronounced "shch," like in "hash check," and ? was the vowel in "sit." But the way my Russian professor says it, ? is "shshy," like a long, soft ?, and ? is like a German u-umlaut gliding to a short ?. Is the way my professor pronounces it just a feature of certain accents/dialects (in her case, Moscow), or is that for all Russian, or what?

Nobody here speaks Russian, then?

Maybe some do, they just don't speak English, so they don't know what your thread is about.

My Russian professor pronounced ? the way that you were first taught. He pronounced ? as a kind of back of the throat 'i' sounding vowel. It's very hard to describe. Almost like Fonzie's "Hey" or whatever it was that he said on that show. :p

Typical of Moscow dialect. You learned it correctly, but your prof is also correct because dialects and accents still reflect the language. Don't be intimidated. :)

Cheers ! :)
