Help with router's and remote desktop

Hey, I just picked up the DLINK DIR-655 to replace my NetGear WGR614 router.
First thing that happened was that I could not Remote Desktop into work. All other things worked, ( I did not check my XBox as I had to get online with work that day). Connected al my computers to it and the only computer that I could connect to was my Windows Home Server. I could not connect to any other computers inside my metwork or work. I connect to work using a VPN connection and it didn't work at all, but I could ping the computer from the command prompt.
Second I went out and researched, and then opened up the Port Forwarding rules for port 3389, the default port for RDP.
Thirdly I contacted DLINK support and that was a joke, no help at all.
Fourth, I reconnected my old router which doesn't have the port forwarded and for some reason I can now connect from all my computers.

What am I doing wrong? I think it has something to do with the DLINK but I am not sure. Could it be that my Netgear didn't do it right?

Is this normal? If it is, how do you make it so that every computer can remote into each other and to the outside?

More than likely, if you can ping the work computer once connected, then you are probably natting, and its dropping you onto the same subnet. Depending on how your nat is setup, it may not let you access a machine on the same subnet as you. 1.1 is generally really common, but shouldnt be common in the work place just for this reason.
As for inside your network at home, make sure all machines have rdp allowed, then make sure that you are not using an xp machine with higher authentication (without the correct patches). etc.

Thanks for the response. How do I address the natting issue? Forgive my ignorance.
On the home stuff, I have done that, they are all win7 with current updates.

change your internal network ip to something other than the 1.1 network. make it something higher like 192.168.10.1 or something like that. just get it off the same network as the one you have in other locations.

Ahh ok. OH ok, that might have been the issue. The NetGear one has a different IP address than the DLink, so that would make sense. Thank you very much, I will try that soon.
