help with raid

i had 3 drives in raid 5. one somehow got loose from the volume set. so i deleted the volume set and the raid set and then recreated them with the default settings. now it wont work 🙁 i never initialized the drives so the data should stil be there

is there any kind of neat program that can help me determine what settings were used on the drives? (like striping or volume name and stuff)

Since you already deleted the RAID set then most likely the data is gone unless you use 3rd party data recovery software it will be very hard retrieve the old data. If you can afford t lose the data and want the system to work again. Start from scratch with your RAID set and re-install OS.

If one drive was out of the RAID 5 volume, why didn't you either a) backup the data to another drive, then redo the RAID array, or b) (what you should do) correct the problem with the third drive, and restore the array. With 1 drive gone, the array is functional, albeit in a critical state (it is no longer redundant).

EDIT: What are you using for your RAID controller?

its an areca 1210 sata raid controller. i cant afford to lose the data. and i deleted the raid set and recreated it because that was the procedure given to me by their own tech support. later on i was given a different tech support number with a much more knowledgeable tech who told me the correct procedure. still though he said that the first procedure i was given should work, if all the settings of the raid set were recreated exactly (since i did not initialize the drives), but that does not seem to be the case. any software i could use here would be fantastic
