Putting together a new system. Read a lot of posts and I guess still crazy enough to get a ASUS A8N32 sli deluxe although I am expecting it to work perfectly. I want to set up a raid but new to doing this so need help. I have two 250 GB drives that I want to work together, more for backup of each other. Then I have a 500 GB and another 250 GB in the case. Can I set up the 2-250's and let the other two be separate for just storage space to be accessed as needed? If yes, how should I do it? Please try to explain in some detail because I really want to hook it up correctly.
Also took note on some testing posted that two video cards working together are not that much better then one. Is this the case with everyone else? Really appreciate any help given.

Thanks

Welcome to the AT Forums. Please disregard J-Y, he should learn to mind his manners and not treat a noob that way (but posting in the wrong section sort of leaves one open to abuse) - perhaps another vacation would help him in that regard... ;)

The RAID question belongs in the peripherals section and the video card question belongs in the Video section - mmKay.

RAID - 1 (mirroring) is fairly easy to implement but isn't a valid backup method. It is basically for reducing downtime to a minimum. If you want a reliable backup, put one of your drives in an external enclosure and use a proper backup software like EMC Retrospect Express HD or NovaBack to plan and create your backups as RAID-1 tends to reduce performance a bit. You can find RAID tutorials and articles on sites like http://www.storagereview.com and over on the http://www.Anandtech.com side of this site. A search site like http://www.ask.com lets you ask natural-language questions to find what you need (e.g. How do I set up a RAID-1 array?) .

re. vid cards: I don't think most sane people really need SLI or Crossfire video (or to spend over $100 on a vid card either). That's for the "more money than sense" types (who are probably using OPM anyway).

Thanks for replying. Like you said, new to this and now that I have some direction and will take the needed action. Not mad at all at J-Y. I understand that some people that know more then others have no time or forgiveness when others are trying to learn what they are very proficient at doing. If he took note, my very first post.

My real job is with the government. Investigative services for the IRS. I'm sure J-Y won't mind if I take an extra good look at his returns the last 7 years. Considering I am much more proficient in that field, I suggest he goes to "google" and look for a good tax lawyer. He is going to need one. ;)

I wouldn't make a statement like that in public, even in jest - people have gotten shot for much less...

Good point. Sorry for any mis-reading on my joke. Won't happen again. Just was a little surprised at the first response I would get here when I took note that mostly everyone is trying to help.

You will find a lot of info on the ASUS website, in the forum for that MOBO. See ya there!
