Help With RAID 0 Screwup

all her vacation photos. I knew I had a bad MB but you know how it is with tech support, how you have to eliminate even things that couldn't possibly be related. "Yes, I tries a different floppy drive, PSU, HDs, etc, and I tried different cables on my floppy drive, PSU, HDs, etc and the audio out jack still doesn't work." So in the midst of all this plugging and unplugging I managed to plug my Promise PDC20378 RAID 0 SATA HDs into the VIA VT8237 RAID connectors. Computer wouldn't start, couldn't find an OS. I put the cables back on the right connectors and it still wouldn't start, no OS. I checked the BIOS to make sure it was set to boot off the RAID and when that didh't work, I unplugged the HDs.

I RMA'd the board so I'm OK for a bit. But when it gets back I'm either going to have some good ideas about how to fix this or I'm going to have some 'splaining' to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

As a last-ditch thing, you could try the Rebuild Array option in the Promise BIOS and see if it can salvage it. Otherwise, Google for "homeless shelter <your city & state>" 😱

(bigger picture: she's that attached to vacation photos?! 😕 )

I'm a little confused as to what you did. Your Promise controller died, so you tried booting the raid array on a VIA raid controller? That sounds like a bad idea to me. The VIA controller likely won't know what the array is, even if it can see it in the first place. Hopefully you didn't try building a new array on the VIA controller. Otherwise you may have erased or written over the previous array. Hopefully when you get the original controller/mobo back you will be able to plug in the drives and have it recognize the array.

As for losing your pics. Well, I know I would be really mad if I lost all my digital pics. It's like losing a photo album. You can't replace them. Text documents you could re-type if needed, but pics can't be replaced.

oh, and one other thing. RAID 0 is risky business. If either drive fails, your whole array is toast. RAID 1 is best if you are going to keep your data on it, since it will be mirrored. You should also start doing more CD or DVD backups of your data. I've been using DVD RW media to do mine, works well for me. I also don't keep my data on my RAID 0 array.

mechBgon- I'll try that but only, as you say as a last-ditch effort. I really think that bebuilding will trash everything. I have successfully used a data recovery program, I guess I should have been asking if anyone has gotten one to work on a RAID array.

Cheetah8799- I actually do make backups of my photos. I have over 10,000 on CDs or DVDs... and 400 or so that weren't. And I am aware of the risks of RAID 0. I don't worry about it because everything of any value is regularly copied... except this one folder.
