Help with Radeon AIW

I just got a Radeon AIW card and so far I am very pleased with it. I have started trying to record TV programs with it. I tried recording at the highest quality settings (.MP2), and get unusable playback with no sound. I am not worried about that yet.

The most pressing issue is recording in the VCD mode. I get acceptable playback and sound, but there is an underlying hissing sound in the playback. Is this just something I have to live with, is my card defective, is there a setting I need to tweak?
