Help with Radeon 9700 Pro

I recently upgraded from a GeForce 3 to a Radeon 9700 Pro. To date this has proven to be a mistake. Since upgrading the system hangs, requiring a hard reset, every time I try to play any game. In fact, it usually hangs when I simply try to enter the Video Configuration of games.

I have already run the Driver Cleaner program to remove any trace of the previous Nvidia drivers. The system configuration is as follows: 350W Power Supply, Shuttle AK35GT-R (KT266A chipset), AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 512MB DDR, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (Retail), Windows 2000 SP3, VIA Hyperion 4.46 drivers, ATI Catalyst drivers v3.4, Microsoft DirectX v9.0

The system worked fine with the previous nVidia card. The problems only surfaced after installing the Radeon 9700 Pro. I have noticed several mixed reviews regarding the issue. Some have expressed that this card only works "right" with and Intel-based system. I also attempted to contact ATI; but, they have not even responded 4 days later. Any help would be appreciated.

me thinks a format and a clean install of XP would solve your problems. 😀

<--- upgraded from a GF3 Ti500 to a Radeon 9700 Pro too... 🙂

I concur.

uhm i would have to say there's a huge majority of people who have amd based computers that use ati cards me being one of em.
it really does sound like you have some left over nvidia stuff. driver cleaner does NOT work imho, you need to be much more thorough.

I went from a GF3Ti200@Ti500 to a 9700pro as well.
I thought that uninstalling the old nvidia drivers, and deleting anything nvidia would see me fine, but it didnt, and i got crap frame rates, errors, crashes, ect;
Formatted HD, and re-installed windows, installed cat2.4(latest at time), and my fps went through the roof, errors and crashes went away.
So the morel here is, FORMAT & REINSTALL.

I agree. Ut2k3 and 3dMarrk03 would freeze up but worked like a charm after a clean format and reinstallation
