HELP! With Radeon 9500 PRO

I just purchased a Radeon 9500 PRO. The sole purpose behind this purchase was for my son to play video games. He plays mostly Asheron's Call 2 and Star Craft (and a few others).

My system contains:
Shuttle AK31 V3.1 motherboard with KT266A via chipset
512 MB RAM
AMD Duron 1.1 Ghz processor
Radeon 9500 PRO with 128 mb RAM
onboard sound
Running win 98 SE and directx 8.1
LAN with 3 computers behind Linksys cable/dsl router.

Initially it appeared that the card worked great. He was able to bump up the graphics on AC2 and all looked lovely. However, then we noticed a terrible "lag" problem. He can play for a few minutes and then everything slows down incredibly. The game shows ping time responses of 3000 to 20000 ms. It will stay lagged with very little changing on the display for about a minute and then suddenly start working again. This repeats over and over.

My first thought was that it was the game servers lagging or perhaps a problem with the router.
However, he can play just fine on the other 2 computers. When he plays on the following system:

same shuttle motherboard
512 mb ram
AMD XP1600 processor
running Windows XP
NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS with 32 mb RAM

everything is fine. No lag problems at all.

This lag problem occurs with both AC2 and Star Craft. Star Craft uses minimal graphics and therefore is making little use of the video card features. AC2 uses alot more. But Star Craft lags in exactly the same way. Both games can be played without lag on the other 2 computers on the LAN.

So, it doesn't appear to be a router or internet problem.
The problem began when I installed the Radeon 9500 Pro card. Prior to this I had an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX card with 32 mb ram.

I did update the radeon drivers to the latest at the time I installed it a couple weeks ago.

I don't know what to do now. This is so very frustrating. :( My son asked me to get rid of the card and give him back his geforce2. It was ugly but at least he could play. With his radeon card, the lag is so bad it's unplayable.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

:(

Make sure you have new drivers from ATI. ANd you need to use a drivercleaner to remove all traces of your old Nvidia drivers. Hope that fixes it.

The lag problem is a known issue and is *supposed* to be fixed with the Cat 3.4 drivers that are to be released around may 15th. I'm not sure if the issue was present on the cat 2.5, 3.0, or 3.1 but is definately there on the 3.2. Try the other drivers to see if it fixes it. Otherwise, wait for the cat 3.4

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

I used the driver cleaner (as recommended) to clean off both the nvidia drivers and the ati drivers.
To do this, I used add/remove programs to remove the existing drivers.
Then rebooted in safe mode and ran the driver cleaner.
Then I rebooted into windows.

I tried to install the Cat 3.2 drivers. The install shield crashed.
So I tried to install the Cat 3.1 drivers. Got the same error message.

So now I have an unusable computer with NO video drivers!!! :disgust:

The error I get is:

Error Number: 0x80070725
Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub.
Setup will now terminate.

So what in the world is the RPC stub and where am I supposed to get the compatible one?????

Many thanks in advance!

I would run with the Catalyst 3.1 drivers for now. At least until the 3.4 version is released and people have a few days to play with it.

Problem with that recommendation is that SC and AC2 have problems with all version of the 3.2's including Omega's. I would do as mentioned above and install the 3.1's and wait patiently, like most of us, for the 3.4's which are only a week away.
