Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz FSB: 1066 Cache: 2MB
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20GHz FSB: 800 Cache: 2MB

Is it better to have a higher processor speed or higher fsb speed?

thanks!

If your gonna be getting a aftermarket CPU cooler, like the Arctic Silver 7, you should go with the 6300 and just overclock it 3.GHz. From the looks of it, that CPU is a decent overclocker, and 3.0 is good enough for most people unless your an enthusiast/extreme gamer. Although at 3.0GHz you would only be in the low to mid 30's c temp wise, which gives you tons of head room and you could probably run at 3.5GHz all the time with that cooler and feed all your needs.

thanks for the info...i dont plan on overclocking either processor though! those are my 2 choices for processors and i guess my biggest question is what helps more? having a higher processor speed or a higher bus speed?

thanks!

If you're not overclocking, then the faster CPU speed would be the winner, even though it has a slightly slower FSB.

so for the most part, the advantage of a higher bus speed is overclocking purposes?

Not exactly. The E4500 will be the easier to overclock because it has a higher default multiplier and a lower default FSB. Overclocking the Core2 is achieved by increasing the FSB, so starting from 11x200(800) is easier than from 7x266(1066).

Anyway, within a single architecture (e.g. Core2) overall clock speed FTW.

The E4500 is definitely a better choice whether you're overclocking or not. Higher FSB doesn't always translate to better performance these days, FSB is a means to overclock locked-multiplier CPUs. Plus, it's 400MHz faster :)

And if you eventually decide to overclock, E4500 is a better choice to do it than E6300 with the exact same reason betasub has explained.
