Hey. I have been using microsoft powerpoint 2000 at my school, and I have been creating slides where I insert pictures that I scanned myself. The problem is that my powerpoint files always end up being absolutely humongous, sometimes in excess of 100 mb, and only from about 10 slides! I tried lowering the quality of the images that I insert by turning them into jpegs, which did decrease their size. However, it seems that whenver I insert them into a slide they are turned back into bitmaps by powerpoint because when I save a presentation, it could be in excess of 100mb even though the jpegs that I inserted, which are all thats in the presentation, may amount to no more than 2 or 3 mb. I would really appreciate any information on how to reduce the size of my presentations. TIA

My first question is are the pictures you are using for backgrounds?

If it is a background you need to set it up as a background. That way PP will only store one copy of the pic and use it for all the slides. If you put the background in each frame manually, if there are ten pages, it will store ten copies of the same picture.

Second, what quality are you scanning at? The scanner companies want you to spend money on very high dpi machines but I've found if your'e not a graphic designer or something, 200-300 usually looks just fine. Especially for inserting into PP because it will never be printed.

If this still isn't enough, you'll have to run the photoes through a graphics optimizer. I use Photoshop but I'm sure there are many others that are simpler and cheaper if you don't have that. They will allow you to reduce the file size and look at the results as compression is increased.
