I'm at wits end here trying to figure out what is going on.
I picked up Portal 2 in the recent Steam sale but it freezes so much it is unplayable. It freezes about 20s into starting any level. Only the game freezes, it doesn't lock my computer, I have to alt-tab and kill the process.
I tried reading up and I saw that AV programs may conflict with it so I tried disabling, and even completely uninstalling it but to no avail. It seems to be completely random as it happens usually but then sometimes doesn't. Maybe when I change one of the video settings?
I also read it may be vsync and/or multicore rendering causing problems but disabling those haven't stopped the freezing. I've tried running it in compatibility mode as well as setting affinity to 1 of the 6 processors.
I'm running Win 7 x64. Every other game I try works fine. This is the first time I have had problems with a Source game, although admittedly this is the first time playing one since Portal 1.
Anyone know what could be going on? HELP!!

SOLVED!!
It turns out the game just randomly pauses...it doesn't actually hang.
Press escape, resume game, and voila.
