The fan on my exactly a year and a week old PNY FX5200 ULTRA died yesterday. The card was purchased 10/11/2004 form OD Third stage clearance.

I need to purchase a replacement fan and PNY doesn't give a darn. So, where can I purchase a drop in replacement fan on this sheit?

Thanks

Why not just get a newer card... a good one can be had for $100. Less even.

Thanks guys.

I don't need a newer card. I don't game and hence the FX5200 is more than plenty. So, there is no way to buy a drop in fan for that card?

Thermaltake has a replacement GPU hsf unit, available from Newegg, I believe, and so does Cooler Master or another manufacturer of similar products. They aren't hugely expensive, less than $10 for the second one at CompUSA, I think. But the "Crystal Orb", is just slightly bigger than needed for most of the GPU's that just barely need any fan, like the FX 5200. (It's too large for the GF3-Ti 200 I wanted to replace the fan on.) You could probably find a passive heat sink from a Northbridge chip that would work.

As you already know, the 5200 runs extremely slowly. That means it generates only moderate heat levels. A large enough passive heat sink would surely be sufficient (and I would imagine you could find some such cards are still being produced).

You don't even need one with a fan. There are pleanty of passively cooled 5200's like this one. You could reduce the noise by trying to find a passive heatsink for it.

I was just thinking something like that. I've seen many a 5200 cooled with a cheesy heatsink, so I'm thinking you should just find a compatable passive heatsink.

Doesn't even have to be compatible... glue the damn thing on. :) Not like you'd be reducing it's value since it's barely worth $25 used.

OK. I suppose my post has not been clear enough. I have a PNY FX5200 Ultra. My other PC has a regular PNY FX5200 too. The difference between the two, the Ultra version has a larger board and a LARGE heatsink. It has ONE heatsink that covers the RAM chips and the GPU. With the fan out, the card was quite warm. So, I suppose just replacing with a regular VGA cooler is not an option? The Large heatsink is stuck to the RAM with something and I don't know if I can pry it out. Hence I was looking for a drop in fan.

Here is a picture of a somewhat similar Heat Sink.

Hence I need to see if I can get a replacement fan.

Thanks

You could try just unplugging that fan and getting a pci slot fan that brings in air from some place like www.svc.com. That would probably move much more air than that little fan was + it will be a very easy install.
