Help with pc build not booting

Hello,

I'm having a nighmare with a computer I'm building for my aunt. I've put all the compents in the case, plugged in all the cables and turn it on and it beeps once (which I thought meant it was ok) and then get as far a saying amd althon 1300 mhz and then just stops. It won't let me get into the bios but it does turn off when you press the power switch which I thought was unusal if there's a major problem.

It consists of a 6 week old acorp motherboard (hey it was cheap!) which I tested for a week when I bought it and it was fine, and has been in it's box in a drawer until yesterday. An old 1.3 ghz Duron I've had spare for ages (which was working fine 6 weeks ago - the last time it was used). A new case and 512 meg of generic pc2100 DDR which I bought from pcworld yesterday (1 dimm)

It also has a 56k pci modem(old), a new belkin pci network card bought from pcworld yesterday, and an old (but again it worked 6 weeks ago) geforce 2 mx 400 agp card. For drives there's an old 40x cd drive, a 4.3 gig seagate hdd and a 10 gig maxtor hdd.

So far I've tried unconnecting all the ide devices, switched the ram into the other slot and clearing the cmos but to no avail.

I'm starting to think that maybe the motherboard is knackered but I don't really know just guessing.
Any help or suggestions would be most appriecated as the look on my little cousins faces when I told them their computer wasn't working yet was heartbreaking!

thats a tough one...you used a lot of old cheapo parts...maybe it came back to bite you in the ass?

have you tried a different PSU?

Does the memory even count up after the CPU is identified? Also, take out all the parts except the vitals (cpu, ram and video) and see what happens. This means unplugging all IDE devices. If it does boot, then plug the componants in one by one to narrow down the culprit.

Let us know what happens.

No the memory doesn't count up, it doesn't get that far (although that would be the next thing that should happen). I'm going to try the power supply from my system an Enermax 460W and my ram adata ddr 450 but probably wont get the chance until wednesday. But I'll post what happens.

Thanks for your help.

Ok sorry I forgot to post the solution. It was the old modem. When I took it out the pc booted up fine.
