Help with P4 Overclocking

Sorry to sound like such a n00b, but I'm new to overclocking P4 systems (experience with Athlon).

I just installed:
Abit BD7II
P4 1.6a - SL66S Costa Rica - 320SA542-0546
Mushkin PC3200 DDR
Alpha PAL8942 with a Thermaltake Thermal 80mm fan
Coolermaster ATC-201 case

I did the "Wire Mod" on the P4. I think I need to put a bit more Artic Silver III on the P4, because I put a really thin layer on when I installed my heatsink.

Right now, I'm running at default 1600/100. Whats strange is that my Idle temps are 46C. Remember, this is at the default speed. My core voltage is set to default, and displays in the bios at 1.63-1.65v. I tried changing some settings, but really am not sure what settings to mess with.

I did get it to post and boot at:
133FSB
PCI 33 Fixed
16x Mult
cpu/dram 3/4
Vcore +5%
Vmem 2.6
Ram timings CAS2, 2-5-2

Problem was my idle temps were at 51C. I didn't try to push it much because I was afraid it was too hot.

Any advice would be extremely helpful.

Unless your ambient temps are really high, I think there's something wrong with those idle temps. I'm seeing full load temps at 2.1G at around what you see idle! I haven't wire modded though, so maybe it's just the extra voltage.

Still seems high to me. I think I'd reapply the artic silver and check the heatsink fit carefully.

Yeah, thats definatley too high. From my forum skulking (not to be confused with trolling), I have seen that (overclocked) temps tend to be averaging around 40 idle - 50 load. Thoose are my exact temps with my 1.6a on a P4S333 with my AC off. With my AC *on* however... I never get past 43.

Im running at 2.4 right now, and the temps havent changed in the slightest. Im using the entire stock intel cooler, even the stock black waxy crap that was on the bottom of the heatsink. Works great. You may indeed have been a little too frugal with the grease.

Thanks for the replies. Right now, I'm at 2087Mhz. My CPU temps under full load are 55C. This is after running Prime95 for 8 hours without any errors. Also, I have no A/C, and its about 80F (outside) and humid where I am right now.

I think one of the things that is holding me back is the temperature controlled fan on top of my heatsink. the thermal diode is realy short, and I don't think its reading the temps correctly since it is so far away from the heatsink. I have heard of some people removing the diode, but I'm not sure exactly what to do.

What I'll do later today is, remove the heatsink/fan. Reapply Artic Silver III, and replace the Termaltake temp controlled fan with a Mechatronics 53CFM fan.

I'm gonna leave my system at these settings for a while just so I can burn in the processor and motherboard. It seems pretty stable, running Prime95 for 8+hours, and still going. I'm gonna leave it on all day when I'm at work.

Nothing I dislike more than threads like these. People telling him he is doinging something wrong to have P4 Temps higher than theirs.

I have the same chip and Motherboard. I run mine at 2Ghz. My temps are about 48-49 idle and 56-57 load. I think a lot of it has to do with luck. Fans won't help. I used to have 5 normal case fans in my Antec SX635 case including the 2 on the PS. I replaced 2 of the case fans with low speed panaflos. My temps were the same with the case open.

Some people will tell you that your Northwood is too hot, and that you are doing something wrong because there is no way it should be that hot. I have a different opinion after spending weeks trying to get my temp down. Some of the 1.6A and 1.8A chips were originally rated at higher speeds, but Intel dropped them to lower speeds to fill demand at those price points. Of course, some 1.6A's and 1.8A's would not have been rated that high.

You and I got one of these chips.


The only other explanation is that our motherboards are reporting temps too high. I once read a post on HardOCP from someone who had 2 different TH7-II Motherboards. The one showing things like the low VCore (mine does too) showed about 10-15 degrees higher CPU temp than the one that was a little over on VCore.

EDIT: I lean in this direction. Even though I know for 100% that my heatsink is making very good contact with my CPU, the heatsink is only luke warm to the touch on full load. If it were really running at that speed, I would think the heatsink would be rather hot to the touch.

I tried a lot of things.. The Thermal pad at first, then 2 different applications of Arctic Silver 3, I even halfed the small amount I applied the last time by taking the heat sink off and wiping off what was on the HS, and respreading what was remaining on the CPU. No Change. Let me add that using the AS3 over the thermal pad dropped my CPU temp by about 2-3 degrees.

Critical Temp (according to the support email I sent Intel) is 67C, and shortly after that the CPU will simply throttle down and not burn up. I happily run mine at 2Ghz... it does just fine..

...and why would you think you need to put more AS on? More is not better. All you are trying to do is fill in the microscopic craters between the two surfaces. I think all AS says to use in their instructions is a translucent haze over the P4 heat spreader.
