Hi. I've run into a bit of trouble here while trying to eek a little more performance out of my card. First off, a am a NEWBIE when it comes to overclocking. I currently have a Thermalake Geforce "CoolMod" on there, with the copper heatsink and RAM sinks, so I've got a good cooling solution. I applied a nice, thin layer of Artic Silver 3 to the core, but neglected to rub any in on the base of the heatsink. I just simply forgot to do it. Anyhow, my rig is a Dell Dimension 8250, if that give you any idea of the cooling that's going on in that machine.

I'm running the 42.86 Dets, and have upgraded to DirectX9. My previous driver was the 40.72's and I was getting around 12,500 with those. Getting around 11,000 with the 4286's. I downloaded coolbits and started overclocking, increasing the memory at 5Mhz increments (that's what I read you should do). Anyhow, score kept going down in 3dMark2001. I selected only the first 4 game tests so I wouldn't have to sit through the whole thing. I abandoned the effort, returned the clock speeds to normal, and continued about my business. Tried to open a game - NADA. Tried to run dxdiag - NADA. Got errors. So it seems I couldn't open ANY 3d application or game. I had only gotten the memory clock to about 670, and the core to 310. I don't know if this is a coolbits incompatability with DirextX9, the 4286 Dets, or my card. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, deleted the NVIDIA reg keys, and I can open up 3d apps again. Another strange thing that was happening when coolbits was in the reg, my card only showed 64 megs. I tried NVHardPage too, and got the same results.

I guess my questions are: 1) What is the BEST Detonator driver for overclocking 2) Is there a better program than Coolbits to overclock? 3) What am I doing wrong???

I'd like to get this card into the 13,000 range, with my current cooling. Do you think this is possible with my current configuration??? Any ideas?
Oh, and if someone is out there who was an avid NVIDIA owner, and jumped ship in favor of the ATI Radeon 9700, I'd like to hear your thoughts. I have been lookng at the All In Wonder Radeon 9700, because of the on-board tv-tuner. I cannot afford to put seperate tv tuner card in my machine, as it will end up sharing IRQ's with the USB controller. Dell's BIOS are SEVERELY limited, and you can assign seperate IRQ's to devices. ALOT of things end up getting shared. I went through 4 seperate clean installs trying to get my Audigy Gamer on its own, seperate IRQ that wasn't a "virtua" IRQ that Xp likes to assign. I finally figured out I needed to take out my controller card and put the Audigy in PCi slot 2, clean install, then re-install the controller in order to get the Audigy on IRQ 11 (though it is shared with one USB controller). BUT, no more pops/crackles!!!

Thanks in advance for any replies!!!!:D

Those 4286s are still beta, so that could be a problem. For more stability only use drivers that are WHQL certified. I think the last certified are the 3082s. Yeah, they're old, but they are tested to be stable and perform correctly. I never had any problems with the 4072s, but I wasn't using them for long before I upgraded my mobo and reformatted.
