Help with outlook express

I'm about to format (hence posting here instead of A-P-G forum.. I need a quick answer). My Outlook Express has been screwed up for a while... I can't put messages in the trash, or I get an error. I can't export messages, or I get an error. Basically all I want to do is save all of my messages somehow, for importing into a fresh install.

When I try to export messages, it says there is an error initializing MAPI... whatever that is. Basically up until now, I've always just copied the entire directory where it stores my mailboxes and stuff, and load it into outlook. However, this copies everything exactly how it was, including the errors.

Does anybody know of any free programs that I can use to export my messages? It would even be alright if I could use a different program to view them, I don't need to load them into Outlook again. If there is a way to save them all as text files even, that would be great.

I don't know of an external program to export them, but have you tried changing the share folder? Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store Folder. Possibly OE just got messed up and the share itself is safe. You could try saving it to a disk and opening it on a different computer

If I remember right, Outlook Express 5 and 6 uses .dbx extension to save your messages. If you can back those dbx files up, you can use external programs (do a search on google for 'outlook express dbx') and read the messages.

try dragging and dropping all of the messages into a folder... that's what I do when I reformat.

AH! Thank you 😀 I found a program that will let me extract and view .dbx files... thanks a bundle!
