This is for a Win2k system moving from DSL back to a 56k dial-up connection. System's tweaked for PPoE DSL (RWIN 64k, MTU 1492). What are the optimal settings for a 56k dial-up connection, and how do I go about setting them? Thanks!

Just delete the DefaultRcvWindow, MaxMTU and MSS settings. That will put it at windows default. You won't see a increase by doing any registry tweaks with 56k.

I haven't used a 56K in Windows 2000. In Windows 98, registry tweaks almost always helps 56k connections, but it really depends on your ISP. Usually, MTU 576 and RWIN multiplier of 6x-8x works well with 56k.

Hopefully this will help you find out. Let us know if you improve your connection much. I've been thinking of tweaking my piddling little 56k connection.

here is a guide to W2k modem tweaking @tweaktown.com. I'm running 98se here, so i don't know how much it will help. i used the 98se guide to tweak my 56 connection and it worked great. feels much faster. hope it helps.

Watch out! Win2k does a lot of the rwin, mtu settings just fine by itself. You don't need to fiddle it like you did win98.

This is the best guide I've seen lately:

The 3DSpotlight guide claims that turning on hardware compression and turning off software compression is the way to go. I just read a guide that says turning off hardware compression and turning on software compression is the way to go. And the data compression secition in Win2k help supports the latter.

So be careful what you read with these guides. A lot of it turns out to be subjective "I think this is better" recommendations.
