Help with Office XP

My father just called and asked me this question and I have no idea what to tell him. Apparently when he opens any office XP app (word, excel, etc) and lives the computer for a couple of minutes it'll start typing random characters. It's not a keyboard problems because this doesn't happen in other apps. What is this about?
 
Couldn't be the little built-in speech recognition thingy doing the typing, could it? I've seen that interpret random bits of speech and sound as random characters and type them on-screen.
