Help with Notebook Hard Drive interfaces

Hi, I need to replace my laptops hard drive. I bought a replacement that said it had an ATA/100 interface, but it's got different connectors than the old hard drive. Can someone tell me what I need to look for to get the correct replacement?

I took pictures of the two interfaces Pics Here Old hard drive on left. Replacement on right (that wont connect)

What kind of interface does the left drive have?

Thanks

The one on the right is a standard 2.5-in laptop HDD. The one on the left has a proprietary adapter shoved on it that is specific to the brand of laptop it came off of. Every maker has a different adapter - some even use caddies with their adapters. What brand is the laptop?

BTW - you can pull that off and it will be just like the one on the right. And you can put it on the one on the right and it will be a role reversal. 🙂

So, just do that and the replacement will fit right where the old one was.

It's a Compaq laptop. I was thinking of yanking the adapter off the old one but wasnt sure, it also seems likes it on there pretty good. Any tips on getting it off?

Thanks

Nevermind, a little tug with a pair of needlenose did the trick! Well lets see if this works now 😉

How old is the compaq? I recently ordered an M2000Z w/ a 40gb HDD, and I'm pretty confident in the future I'll be upgrading it to something much larger. How easy was the install, etc.?

It was real simple. Just pull it out, transfered the adapter from old to new drive, and slid the new drive in. Booted up and installed OS.

I actually found the M2000 manual (im sure it cant be too different from the M2000Z. . . ), anyways, yeah it look pretty easy. Will have to take a look at it once it comes in early next week.

I thought that would be the case. Keep in mind that you also could have simply cloned your old drive to the new drive, then move the adapter, plug in the new drive and boot to your exisiting OS and programs. No reinstall necessary
