Help with Norton Ghost (enterprise)

Hi, I am trying to create an image file directly on my HD, how would I do that with norton ghost? Should I utilize an empty second harddisk to create this image? Or should I do that over the network and dump the image into a network server?

What and how is the procedure of creating an image file for Win2K?? (I've spent the last 5 hours trying to figure this out 🙁)

I would like to create an image file so that I can broadcast this out to my clients to replicate the HD of the original server.

Can anyone help ? Please 🙁

Thx !

1. You can't create an image file on the same drive that the image is being created from .... use a network drive, a wriatable cd-romdrive or (my preference because of speed) a second hdd

2. You can make an image of a NTFS drive (the file system typically used by NT/WIN2K) by booting of a floppy that has the ghost program on it and running the ghost program from the floppy. Again, you need to have a place for the image to go ... hdd, cd etc.

Ghost comes with a really nice PDF help file that explains it all pretty well.

Good luck.

OK, let's go with the option of creating the image on the second HD.

So, do I need to format that second HD? Or can I boot it up without any partition (I tried this, no go).

Is the boot disk the one that has ghost.exe on it ? I have created that bootdisk and I will try to format the HD now.

Any more good advice ?

Yes, format the second drive. The image file needs to be placed somewhere that's already formatted. Think of it this way, you can't save a Word document on a drive that isn't formatted. Same with Ghost's image files.

However, Ghost *can* do a direct mirror of a partition onto another drive. In that case, the destination doesn't necessarily have to be formatted .. I think (I've never tried it).

To be honest, you're much better off contacting Symantec or whoever your network administrator is (assuming it isn't you). If this is an important procedure for your network, you probably shouldn't be asking on message boards for solutions.

1. Boot floppy needs to have ghost.exe on it
2. Destination drive for an image file (a *.GHO file) should be formatted as FAT16 FAT32 ... I ALWAYS use FAT32 in order to overcome the 2GB FAT16 limit.
Destination drive for a clone (disk-to-disk copy) operation does not need to be partitioned or formatted. If it is partitioned/formatted, the cloning operation will completely overwrite it.

Seriously, read the help file/info on the Symantec web site pertaining to the Ghost product.

PS: If making an image that you need to put on CDRs, run Ghost with the -split=640 -autoname command line switches in order to create a set of image files that each will fit on a CD.

Good luck and check out the help file. It is excellent.

Have never done the network thang, but this may help get u started. There is a guy here who has done this. Forget his name.

Thank you all for the comment !
It was great. I can ghost my HD into another HD now.

But it would be more efficient if I can use multicast server and let a backup ghost server pull a ghost file out of it.

Anyway, you help is much appreciated. I did read the Norton ghost manual, the whole thing !!! 🙂

The easiest way to do this is to create a dos boot disk that will log you into the network.

After doing that you will need to do a net use and create a drive letter to where you want to store your image on the server.

After you have done this you will need to put in your floppy of ghost walker and launch the ghost app. select to disk, then to image and select the drive that you just created.

The hardest part is making the Dos boot disk to log you into the network.

On our network we use all of the same NIC cards so it is easy for us to copy images down.

If you do not want to mess with it you can use a second HD, you will just have to carry it around with you and add it as a slave to every machine you want to use it on.

Keep in mind that when you ghost everything is the same including CPU name, if you statically have IP's ect.. You will need to make some changes.

Good Luck

SUOrangeman message below is correct about this statement. I have done this.

Ghost *can* do a direct mirror of a partition onto another drive. In that case, the destination doesn't necessarily have to be formatted

Have anyone tried using sysprep to prepera ghost drive for Win2K .. I tried that and had a serious problem. Now Win2K can't even boot. It says that a***.dll is missing, not letting me to login to Win2K 🙁

Anyway... thanks again for the comments. I am still playing with this ghost thing.
