I have decided to build one for the first time. I'm a gamer so basically, it means I'm going to go the amd athlon 64 route. My budget is $1000-1200 including monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

All opinions are welcome. Thanks!

You might want to do some research b4 just posting. If you come back with a basic setup, post it and I'll comment.

Recepie for making a computer: Choose a processor, add a motherboard, trow in some RAM and flavour with a Video crad of you choice.

Hint: Pick a socket 939 athlon64 3200+ as the processor, and go from there.

Well first you want to decide between Winchester, Venice, San Diego, or even X2. I would recommend either Venice or SD and at least a 3500+. Next you should take advantage of the dual channel RAM by getting, of course, dual channel RAM. Pick a good motherboard (depends if you want AGP, PCI-E, or SLI). After that, pick a video card. Then you're pretty much set on the main components.

*Shameless plug*

I have a DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D if you're interested in buying it. Only 2-3 months old. I just pulled it out of my system to sell to someone else but he pulled out of the deal. Everything is in full working order and never overclock on that system. PM me if you're interested in this mobo.

Are you planning on OCing?

CPU: A64 939 3000+ or 3200+ Venice
HSF: Zalman 7700 AlCu or Cu or Thermalright XP-90 with a panaflo (add the M1A under choose a fan)
Motherboard: DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D (AlphaQ's is 20 cheaper than NewEgg's)
RAM: Corsair ValueRAM 2x512MB
Video Card: Connect3D X800XL
HDD: Seagate What size do you want?
Optical Drive: NEC 3540A
Case: What kinds do you like?
Monitor: What would you like? LCD or CRT? Size?
Mouse: Any good optical mouse. Cordless or not?
Keyboard: Any good keyboard. Do you want an ergonomic keyboard or a standard?

Ill put links up soon, and some of the stuff may turn out to be over your budget, but Ill have alternatives then.

Not another one of these... It would help a lot of you did your own research. You'll learn a lot more, instead of just saying "I have $xxxx, build me a computer".

Thanks ssvegeta, but mine is only $20 cheaper than Newegg. But again, Newegg taxes some places as well as shipping fees.

Sorry about the post. I'm thinking of going with:
Buying all parts from Newegg

MSI K8N Neo4-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $86
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Integrated into Chip FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $146
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3520A BK - OEM $48
Rosewill TU-155 Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window -Retail $52.99 (Stock PSU??)
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail $80.25
Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM $56
MSI NX6600GT-TD128E Video Card - Retail $178

Total:647.24 without tax and shipping costs

In addition to the total, I'll need help with the monitor...
17-19 inch LCD if possible
no speakers
Cheap Mice and Keyboard

That should be about. All opinions are welcome. Thanks!

Edit: sorry about the no links

You can get a NEC 3540 For like $42 from monarch. A little better, a little cheaper.

What are you doing about a PSU?

You could get a Antec case w/ a PSU. That would be fine if you do not plan on overclocking.

You could buy the Cooler Master case at newegg for $50 and buy a cheap TTGI or Fortron 350w PSU. That would be fine for your system if you do not plan on overclocking.

The rosewell case is already $50 so how about going with a PSU that has more watts and I'm willing to spend $60-80 for the new PSU.

Forgot to mention:

I want a quiet PSU so I'm hoping the entire pc is quiet.
