help with new TV and QAM tuner

I just received my new TV for the bedroom: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16889025002

Everything is perfectly fine, but I can not seem to get the NTSC/QAM tuner to work.
I have the cable from my wall going directly to the cable in (there's cable in and antennae inputs) I can watch basic cable fine on it, but I can only input channels 1-99
and TimeWarner broadcast the unscrambled HD channels in my area in 500+:

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Maybe I do in fact need a cable box inbetween wall jack and TV to get to the higher numbers?

QAM doesn't use your cable company's channel numbers. For example, with my local comcast NBC is 85.1, ABC is 85.2, Government Channel is 86.1, FSU Channel is 86.2, PBS is 86.3, PBS Kids is 86.4, CBS is 86.5, and FOX is 87.1.

There's no way to either scan or display just the digital channels? What are the options for channel scanning using the cable in?

Any time a channel has a "sub-channel" like x.1 x.2 x.3, etc. it's digital.

That's incorrect. The channel numbers for OTA are different than the QAM channels.

I use an antenna to get the OTA signals but on the TV in the other room, I just auto program and I pick up the unencypted QAM channels that TWC puts out. Something I noticed though is that the signal strength is only about 40% so once in a while I see a drop or two because the tuner is not that sensitive.

I have to say I'm not overly impressed
in the past 24hrs I've seen 3 things actually broadcast in 720 or better... everything else is 480 STV and looks like sh!t

Do you have tried the cable box? Have you called TW and asked if you need a digital cable box?

You have to watch during primetime. During the day and late at night there isn't much in HD.

Yeah lotsa sports Sunday and then at night Grammys etc in 1080i
very nice... hard to switch back to STV then 🙁
