I am ordering new system components tonight.
Here are my two choices which cost the same; so help me decide!
I will be running Windows XP Pro and I already have an ATI AIW 9700 Pro and an Audigy2 sound card; how will these components work with the motherboards below?

Athlon XP 3000+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
(2) 512MB Corsair XMS 3200C2

or

Intel Pentium 4 2.4C (800MHz fsb)
Abit IS7 865PE
(2) 512MB Corsair XMS 3200C2

Does HyperThreading make a difference in Windows tasks like running IE and MovieMaker?
Which system would be overall faster and give me less problems?
Help me decide

I will not be overclocking, and my system will hold off on being upgraded again for quite a while.
So what is the best option?
Also what about HT? does it make a difference in common tasks being run at the same time? or is it just hype?

Any recomendations? Anyone have a similar setup that they can comment on?
I just want to make sure my new system is problem free and fast enough.

What are you gonna be using it for ?

I don't know alot about pc's but tons of people told me to go with that P4 setup.I see you list something about movie maker so if it's dvds you wanna make go with the P4.I use ulead for my dvds & i'm about to get me the same P4 setup as theres a patch for hyperthreading that makes the job 30/40% faster.

If you're using it solely for MovieMaker, than the P4 is faster than the AXP by a fairly large margin. However, that was only the 2.8Ghz/i850E versus a 2700+. I wouldnt know how a 2.4C processor or a Barton would scale. Either way, it looks pretty bad. Although I'm curious to know where a 3000+ costs as much as a 2.4C

Benchmarks:

The P4 setup is much more upgradeable: 2.4 -> 3.2 or even 3.4 later, vs. 3000+ -> 3200+.

But at stock speeds the 2.4C only beats the 3000+ in some benches, and I don't know if MovieMaker is one of them.

If not planning to upgrade the CPU later (and not overclocking), then in your shoes I'd probably either:
(a) save $75+ and get an XP 2800+ and PC2700 DDR
(b) spend +$53 and get a P4 2.6C to make sure I'm beating the 3000+ and get a little more power

as dave pointed out, the 2800+ is more cost efficent and if not overclocked, will prolly be an all around faster CPU than the 2.4C

I just got a P4 2.8 800FSB with the hypertheading and it is great. I i havew done a little Divx Encoding and it is FAST. Plus Last night was a True test on how well the hyerthreading can work. I know this is a little off topic but here it goes. I created a deticted server for battlefield 1942 with a max of 64 people also know as 64 bots minus the people that join. I as able to creat the server than join it on the same system with no lag on any of the systems. The reason Hyperthreading is so nice is that a CPU does not use all of its resources at the same time, and the hypertheading lets it run a sort of say a virtural CPU inside of it so you have 2 CPU in one. AMD dosnt do that :(

the amd setup will in general be faster than a 2.4c. but i think the 2.4c has more overclocking headroom, but since u not gonna, get amd. i too would like to know how the amd setup 3000+ ended up being same price as the intel setup.

OOPS!, the AMD system would be a pair of Corsair XMS PC2700 (1GB for $150) not PC3200.
That is what makes the cost equal.
I dont care too much about the fastest gamming framerates or the two or which memmory benchmarks faster. I want a fast, reliable and balanced system that will not give me headaches.

This system would most likely not be upgraded or overclocked; I usually build a new system every year or two from the ground up.

I have built many P4 and Athlon XP systems and I like them both, but the P4 seems to do encoding and multimedia better where AMD systems always "feel" faster when working on the desktop and running windows apps than the P4.

My question for P4 people:
Does Hyper Threading make a difference with Windows tasks? such as media player running while doing an ftp download.

My question for AMD/nForce2 people:
How is the nForce2 platform with an ATI All-in-Wonder 9700 Pro?

I've used both a Radeon 7500 64MB and a Radeon 8500 128MB in my nForce2 (A7N8X deluxe) without issues. Haven't used an AIW, but I can't ever recall hearing an issue between it and the Asus board.

Personally, my A7N8X has been very headache-free since day one vs. my old Gigabyte 7VRXP, which was very crash-prone.

Well, I decided to go with the P4 2.4C, IS7, 1GB Kingston Hyperx PC3500 for my new system. Thanks out there for those who gave me some insight and helped me decide.
It should be a smokin' system :D

IF your not overclocking don't waste your money on PC 3500...

Just grab some Hyper X 3200 for 100.00

:)
