Hey, longtime lurker, 1st time poster here. This is a great community, and beyond that a great resource for people.

Im putting together my first build and wanted to make sure it checks out alright. I tried to go with popular, high quality parts Ive seen recommended and used in others builds.

Budget is around $1300ish shipped, not counting a case, which I already have (Antec P180). EDIT: Also don't need speakers, will run through a HT system i already have. Going to purchase XP pro from my university for cheaper than retail. Ubuntu is free.

This computer will be used for day to day stuff (browsing, office apps, music), GIS/remote sensing apps (ESRI products, GRASS on linux, ERDAS Imagine), matlab/mathcad/maple, some gaming (fps, rts, rpgs), will probably dual boot with Ubuntu as well. Im not a huge gamer, and dont need everything running perfectly pretty, but would like to run some of the newer games reasonably well.

I probably wont overclock initially, as Ive never done it before, but i'd like the option to if i feel like it. I know the stock HSF works fine for some light to mid overclocking on these right?

Here's what im thinking for the main rig:

Power supply: SeaSonic M12 SS-500HM for $140 EDIT - Went modular for 10 bucks more.

MOBO: Asus P5B for $185

CPU: C2D E6400 for $220, with a free GR:AW

RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2 800 for $240 AR

Video Card: eVGA Geforce 7900GT 256MB for $206 AR

HD: Segate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB for $95

DVD: Samsung Black DVD burner for $32 EDIT - Switched from lite-on

Floppy/other: Mitsumi Black Floppy and card reader

Case: Already purchased, Black Antec P180 from Frys/outpost from a hot deal, for like $80

Other things:

I need a new keyboard/mouse, was looking at these two, any other suggestions?

KB: Saitek Eclipse for $45- Some people complain of the key label paint coming off, so i might reconsider this. A wireless KB and mouse might be good too. Any ideas?

Mouse: Microsoft Laser Mouse for $25

For a monitor, Im somewhat decided on a factory refurb Dell 2007WFP for $300, I like the added inputs, and widescreen. Gets good reviews overall. Other suggestions appreciated too. Better auto-resolution adjusting compared to some monitors, might be good for my older games (Tribes, Jagged Alliance 2, Various C&C games).

Total for all of this will come to around $1300 from newegg for all that stuff linked, plus another $300 for the monitor.

Would a sound card be a good addition to the build? Can get better/equally as good RAM for cheaper? Is my mobo overkill? I think I may have gone overkill on the powersupply too, but I know seasonic is a good company, and i like the high efficiency of their product, no need to waste electricty. Potential upgrades for this rig in the future would be more HD space, better gfx card (DX 10?), more RAM.

Also, my case has the power supply in a unique location, will the PS's cables be long enough for my mobo? Ive read about others having this problem? Should i buy cable extensions/extenders of some kind? If so, which ones?

Thanks, anandtech, I waste too much (quality) time on these forums, im glad to have made my first post.

Your choices look good to me. As far as the PS goes, it is not an overkill, but I would want one with modular cabling. I'm not particularly fond of LiteON, because I had two of their drives fail in a row, with a little more than a year of usage on them, but others seem to like them okay.

I know Seasonic makes quality PSUs, but $140 seems like overkill to me - especially since my rig below is running great on a 450W Fortron that cost ~$50. :) As an alternative to the P5B, I have the Gigabyte DS3 and it's a great board too, so that may save you ~$40 (assuming you don't need any of the extra features of the P5B).

I can't comment on that RAM either, but this Patriot RAM has served me well. Stable at DDR888 4-4-4-12 and currently working on DDR1067 5-5-5-15. :D One more option to consider. Everything else looks fine to me.
