Help with new build

I am putting together a new rig soon, (AMD dual core, Asus A8N-E mobo, other goodies) and I would like to utilize my present SCSI drive (73G Atlas IV, 10K RPM, 68pin) and host adaptor (Adaptec 19160N) as the boot devices.

I have never set up a SCSI as anything other than an auxillary drive and I am wondering what sort of hoops I'll have to jump through to install Windows XP Pro to the SCSI and use it as my boot drive?

Any tips or pointers will be appreciated.

WinXP Setup should natively recognize your 19160N, which means you do pretty much the same thing as you'd do with an ATA drive 😎 Just make sure there are no other drives installed (USB or ATA) when you set up Windows.

If you add ATA drives after the fact, then you'll need to go into the mobo's BOOT menu in the BIOS and specify your SCSI drive as the hard drive that it's supposed to boot from, because otherwise the mobo will drool on itself and be a 'tard and try to boot form the ATA drive 😛

Hope that helps and make sure not to expose your fresh WinXP to unfirewalled connections until you at least have SP2 installed and a firewall in place (software, hardware or both). 🙂

That sounds simple enough... thanks for the input.

I also have a question about the PSU. Can I get by with the PC Power and Cooling Silencer 470 (26A on 12V rail) or do I need the PC P&C Turbo-Cool 510 Express/SLI (36A on the 12V rail)? I won't ever be doing SLI, but I will have a pretty full complement of hardware in the case (3 HDs, 2 opticals, 4G of RAM, fans everywhere), and, of course, the AMD X2 4200.

I don't know what video card you'll be using but a 470W PC P&C ought to be great for any single-card system with those specs. Asus's official recommendations in the chart on this pic for SLI systems... looks like your unit would basically make the cut for any of them, let alone a single-card setup 😎
