I just built a new athlon64 rig, and it's acting really strange. When I turn it on the computer starts for like 2 seconds, shuts itself off and then starts again for another 2 seconds and continues like this in a loop. Any ideas, I've built a lot of computers and I've never seen this specific problem.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Thermaltake Venus 12
Abit AV8
Gainward Geforce 6800GT
1GB A-Data DDR500
Antec p160 with Antec True550
3HD's, 2 Optical drives (tried disconnecting these already)

Sounds like the problem I am having with my OLD box (see the thread I just posted)

Try taking your motherboard out of the case, laying everything out on a piece of cardboard or some such nonconductive surface and booting up.

If it works, then it means your motherboard was touching a metal part of the case and causing electrical problems.

Aside from that, make sure all your cables and components are seated properly (but I'm sure you did that already)

Now it seems to be making a little progress, it's more like 5 seconds between reboots, long enough for me to figure out that it is in fact outputting video, I see the bios for a split second and then reboot. I've seen computers turn on but not output video when there is metal touching something but never a problem like this.

see if there is any metal touching the motherboard. it sounds like it may be shorting out. (check the little metal prongs sticking out from the I/O plate ;))
