Okay so My setup is the following:

DirectTV -> AVR 2309ci (coming into the HDP input) -> sharp se 65 inch lcd

I use a Logitech harmony universal remote which when you turn on "watch tv" turns on all three units and sets the reciever to HDP (not like it gets pulled off of HDP often anyway).

For three years this has been working fine. Last week it started acting funky where the reciever gets set to HDP but it is as if doesn't recognize the input of the HDMI wire from the direct tv...but then if i change the source to dvd and then back to HDP it recognizes it. And each time i change channels it does the same thing where tv will go blank and i hvae to change the source to something else and then back to HDP for the reciever to realize there is something coming in....

I have for now just taken the reciever out of the loop and sending the direct tv directly to my tv but am not happy about not being ablce to use my reciever.

any thoughts?

I have not used optical cable...just wondering why after 3 years it would go bad...is this common with denon's? it is the case with the DVD input as well when i moved things around.

have you tried using a optical cable from the direct tv receiver

It's the video that's cutting out so I don't see how switching to optical is going to fix anything.

Sounds like it's losing the hdcp handshake. If all other hdmi ports are the same then it's likely the hdmi board is going bad.

i meant hook the hdmi to the tv and just use optical or coaxial for sound ?

Check the firmware history on the DirecTV box. It's possible a recent firmware update hosed the EDID info coming from it.

I have the same problem but it occurs after I change channels. At first I thought it was due to going from HD to SD but it also happens from HD to HD. I am ready to take it back to Best Buy since it is under warranty, but I'm concerned that the technician won't be able to replicate the problem.I welcome suggestions.

@drdawg and caroncvm: I have this same exact problem. In fact I just googled the problem and came up with this thread. I have gone through every possible configuration of menus on the DirecTV DVR and the Denon AVR 2309CI and have not been able to fix it. Basically, it just started happening a couple of weeks ago. When I change channels, the HDMI signal is lost until I change the source to DVD or something else, and then back to HDP again. I have done a hard reset of the Denon as well, and have tried changing HDMI ports also. Nothing seems to work. Highly annoying as every time you change channels (or even use the DVR) you have to change modes to DVD and then back again to re-gain the signal.

It must have been a firmware update that was pushed out to the the directv receiver recently that causes the signal to be interrupted when changing channels, which then forces the Denon AVR into getting out of the HDMI mode or something. I'm ready to throw the thing out. Worked fine since February 2009 also.
