Help with MSI 6163VA

I have my computer for one year now and I would like to upgrade my CPU.
All would be fine if the manual for the motherboard would say which CPU speeds it can take. It just says 'Celeron, PII , PIII processors at 400, 450, 500 MHz and higher'.
And I would like to know what 'higher' is. I mailed MSI on 2 occassions but never got a reply. I can't seem to find this type on their webpage too. I can find a 6163PRO or a 6163BX but no 6163VA.

Maybe someone has at this forum can point me in the right direction ?

thanks !

Very interesting question. I bought my system nearly around the same time you did and knew of only two MSI 6163 variants, the 6163 original and the 6163 Pro, which I bought myself. The BX Master came later but was on the same platform.

My guess is that you bought the 6163 original. This probably means you're unable to support Coppermine processors, limiting you to buying, at the very best, a P-III 600 or Celeron 533.

To determine whether or not your motherboard can support the Coppermine chips, open up your case and look for a blue, round sticker on the motherboard with a 'C' on it. If that's sticker's present, joy to the world, you can support any Celeron chip and any Pentium III that doesn't run at a bus speed of 133 Mhz. That's also helpful with the identification of your motherboard - you've got a 6163 Pro, like the rest of us badasses. 😉
