Hi. I have an Aptiva 350 with a 486 in it lying around here and I would like to upgrade the motherboard and processor to around 300 or 400 cpu. Any suggestions as I would like to make it a linux learning box and I could buy the parts off the For Sale Forum. Thanks:D

If I asked in the wrong forum I am sorry. I just wanted to know what motherboard to use to upgrade this 486 to a faster Pentium type box whether it be Intel or AMD using the same case. Thanks:D

I think you might run into trouble because chances are that the Aptiva has a proprietary motherboard. The older industry standard is the AT format, and the newer one is ATX or variants of it, such as microATX. IBM probably has proprietary-format boards, so you might want to consider searching For Sale/Trade for what we'd call a "barebones" rig that includes case, power supply, motherboard, CPU and memory, and then you can put your existing drives into it. Good hunting! :D

I have my parents old Aptiva with a P1 166Mhz and there is no upgrading the board in it, let alone the CPU is is so proprietary.

I am trying to give it away and no one wants it.

if it's a super socket 7 you might be able to pop a pentium233 in it or maybe a k6-2, should give a little moore oomph, at least enough to run red hat build 6.3
