I am going to build my own budget, hi-horsepower computer and the first thing I am going to buy is the monitor (19"). What is the best brand(s) to buy in the $200-$300 range? I will be using the system for net access, financials, and limited game use.

There is quite a new Hansol budget model that is getting good reviews. I however wouldn't bother with a shadowmask tube. I would much rather have a Sony trinitron with high quality electronics too for the same or less. Trinitrons are better for text, shadowmasks are fine for games and graphics.

Opposite of that actually. A $200 to $300 isn't very good for a 19" in my opinion. The NEC AS90 could bad had in that range but I'm not really sure of any other good ones. Sure there is something like one from the KDS VS line but those really aren't that good and I wouldn't skimp on the monitor such as getting one with low refresh rates or even refurbed.

edit: heh we posted at the same time Ben88. AG is better for graphics but that is not to say that they are horrible for text. I have no doubts that a Sony G400 does have great text, just like many other quality 19" AG's. Just shadow masks usually have crisper text.

I thought it was the other way around. AG's are better for graphics, while shadow masks are better for text. I did read a review stating that the Sony G400 had excellent text and graphics.

well for 200-300$ you cant get much. Maybe a 17" really good monitor or a decent 19" I had a choice of the sony e200, the samsung 700ift or the kds 19" VS19SN for all about $275, i took the KDS , couldn't be happier, they have great tech support too. YOu can probably pick up a KDS vs-190e (i got the vs19sn back when there were still onvia coupons, and onvia raised the price on it to liek $325 now). The vs190e is pretty good my friend has it, its 1 inch deeper than mine (mines short tube), I've heard the vs195e had a hitachi tube, so the 190 might also, thought it could be a cheaper goldstar or samsung. I knowthe vs19sn is supposed to be a panasonic which is why i bought it. I'd get a 19" if you can get it from a name brand, and get a non-geforce card so you can get good 2d on it
