First off, the is my first post so Hello to everyone and thanks for ur opinions

Im really stumped on trying to decide between lcd and crt and I just want to hear some of ur opinions. Ive done a lot of research and it just leads me further and further from a decision.

Currently I have a 19 KDS vs-195e. Its been a solid monitor for about 5 years now, no flickering or anything like that. Ive been lookin into the hyundai imagequest L90d+ like many others. My question to you guys is why u avid LCDers dont mind not being able to play games in 1600x1200. I play games like Empire earth and Command and Conquer in high res and gettin a lcd with 1280 x 1024 u obviously cant play that high. I have the equiptment to play in high res ans I would like to. Basically I want you to convince me either way to which is better in ur opinions. And I cannot affor more than about 400

thanks for u info

My opinion would just be to go with the CRT. You're never going to get that kind of performance out of a $400 LCD.

The reason that people use LCDs is the same reason that they put lights in their cases and use wireless keyboards and mice. It's stylish and looks cool. If gaming is your biggest concern, then it makes no sense to go for an LCD.

$400 is enough to get a good 17inch lcd for gaiming, maybe 19 with a good deal. Either way you will be around 1280x1024. If you can go to $500 you might be able to get one of dells 20inch (as they have massive sales relatively often) and that would be either 1600x1200 or 1600x1024(for the widescreen one.) I have been using an sgi 1600sw for 4 years now and while most games wont run that well on my 9800aiw at 1600x1024 (and many games dont yet support widescreen) I have not had any problems gaiming on it and am happy enouhg with widescreen lcd's to be looking closely at dells 2405fpw as an upgrade this summer (24inch 1900x1200 about $1100).

Yeah, when I got my LCD and my wireless keyboard and mouse the first thing I thought was how stylish this is. Nevermind the fact that I actually have room to do homework on my desk and I don't have wires running across my desk anymore...

Anyways back on topic... If you've really grown used to 1600*1200 you probably don't want an LCD at 1280*1024 because an LCD is sharper and the lower res will be even more apparent. On the other hand you could just turn on Anti Aliasing.

Do you run your desktop at 1600*1200 currently? You probably won't want to go to a lower res if that's what you're used to.

I run my desktop at 1280x1024 so that would be fine, but I think im gonna stick with a new crt 21". I like my high res gaming when possible. I do play cs source ALOT and play that at a lower res so I cant really go with the 1600x1200 lcd because playing at a lower res than the optimal wouldnt be very good so I hear. Newegg has this ViewSonic G220fb 21" PerfectFlat CRT Monitor for $429. Just worried that the picture tube isnt going to be better than my 19 KDS VS-195e, but it shouls be seeing that my KDS in 6 years old

I bought my LCD for two reasons (well, three). I move a lot and got sick of moving a giant CRT with me. Said giant CRT also took up most of my desk space, making it hard to get work done on the desk.

I also gained about 1-1.5 inches in screen size going to an LCD from my CRT.

Sure, it looks cool, but that wasn't my motivation for buying one.

To the OP - make sure the shipping on that CRT isn't going to kill you, 20" monitors are heavy, or at least they used to. If I didn't have a solid oak desk, I don't think my old IBM CRT would have been safe on it 🙂

In your instance I might look at a Dell 2001fp 20" LCD. The native res is 1600x1200 and I have seen these run in 1280x960 (true 4:3 unlike 1280x1024) 1024x768 and even 800x600 and to me it looked good in all settings. I did not put my face up to the screen and look closly for issues with the picture but from sitting down in front of it the picture was sharp and clear. This would be my personal choice for a new gaming monitor in your situation.

I have always been a big fan of CRT monitors but recently began checking out decent LCD's. To me the advantages of the LCD (sharper picture, perfect geometry, brighter, better on eyes, less energy consumption, smaller) outweights it's disadvantages (greyish blacks, resolution scaling, viewing angle limitations and sometimes ghosting). I personally notice no ghosting on my LCD but others say they do so I can't say it does not exist on the newer panels.

Just so you know, my current setup is a 21" Nokia 445pro CRT (1600x1200) and a 20.1" widecreen Dell 2005fpw LCD (1680x1050). I love both and would not have my setup any other way.

Go buy yourself a Dell 2001FP and you'll be happy you did. You have the 1600x1200 resolution, a screensize the equivelent of a 22 inch CRT, and a 16ms pixel response time, all for around 600 or less, depending upon when you buy it (Dell always has deals and coupons).
