these are the parts i have decided on (i would have gone with newegg but zipzoomfly shaves a good amount of money andmost parts ship free 2nd day air):

athlon64 3400

thermaltake tsunami dream

thermaltake 480w psu

MSI neo platinum

1 gig corsair value 2.5 ram

maxtor 200 gig sata

NEC 8x dual drive
(newegg)

i think this would be a prettty good gaming rig, it won't be future proof but when the time comes i'll build another one. i was debating on whether to go with the ati x800pro or the nvidea 6800gt but ecost has the ati x800xt for $450. i'll wait for half-life2 to come out and use my ati 9600xt in the mean time.

A freakishly large number of ATers have expressed discontent with MSI mainboard purchases. I personally wouldn't touch them because of that, though you can of course do what you want. I'd also go with a 6800 over an x800, if you're in the market for a current-gen video card. Looks nice other than that, though you might want to consider a dvd-rom in addition to the r/rw, only another ~$30.

I've read good things about the platinum what have you hear? what are the problesm that the MSI boards have? i kinda wanted to get a board with the nVidia nForce 3 250Gb chipset. what do you suggest?

the x800xt takes one slot uses less power then the 6800 ultra and has faster benchmarks and i can get it cheaper. is there something i'm missing here Gurck (i'm not trying to be facitious)? i will get another dvd-rom but i'll do that later when i have some more cash, right now i just want to get a working rig then fine tune it.

I haven't bought any top end MSI mobos lately but the several low end units I've bought recently have been rock solid. AOpen mobos have also been very reliable for me - though usually not bleeding edge.
.bh.

quick tip: may want to go with a PATA hard disk. since you only have one drive, installation of SATA drivers will be a pain. i dont know the exact numbers on the maxtor you have chosen, but i would guess the performance gain is negligible.

i think gurk was recommending the dvd-rom because they read at 16x whereas the writing drives can usually only do 8x. not that big of a deal unless you do a lot of copying or transfer off of dvd.

as far as the mobo ive heard of quality issues wit msi's mobos but i cant comment on that from experience. i kno that i had a hard decision pickin a mobo. i ended going wit the asus k8v because i knew i couldnt go wrong with asus. its a great board but i do miss not having a pci/agp lock. i would take a look at the asus k8n.
