Help with MB BIOS settings

Hi, all!

I'm a newbie when it comes to overclocking, so please bear with me.
I just bought an el-cheapo BYO system with a PC Chips M805LR motherboard and a 900 Mhz Athlon T-Bird CPU. Yeah, yeah, I know it's a piece of crap, but it's all the budget would support. My question is this:

In the BIOS there is a setting called "CPU Host/PCI Clock/Spread Spectrum" with possible settings that range from 100/33 Mhz/-0.5% to 112/37 Mhz/Off. When I change the setting to something higher than 100/33 Mhz, the CPU appears to overclock, all the way up to 1008 Mhz at 112/37 Mhz. Every benchmark program I have access to shows higher performance numbers. I don't see any significant change in CPU temperature (which is monitored by the MB) when I do this. What's happening here? Am I running the risk of damaging my CPU and/or RAM by changing these settings?

Any input will greatly appreciated.
