hi ...
i tried installing mandrake on my home pc ...
pretty clean install ... everything seemed to go smoothly ...
however, startin my computer up is another story altogether ..
if i start up using a window manager .... it just hangs with a blank screen ... no info whatsoever ...
if i select safe_linux ... it goes fine till it says

starting kswapd ..

or something like that
and doesnt go on from there ???

any ideas ?
thanks for the help ..

ive since tried installing redhat also ... same problem ...

? Question ??

Did you create a swap partition? kswapd is the Kernel Swap Daemon,
it handles the use of free memory pages for the kernel.....

If you are having problems with different distros it can happen
that something in your system is imcompatible with the Linux
Kernel ( doubt that but ... ) what system do you have??

hmmm ....

ok ... as far as my install ... i did not specifically create a swap partition ..
just plugged the cd (both mandrake and redhat) in and ran with the basic install ...
wiped my hd clean with the new install ...

as far as incompatibality issues ... you might be correct ... shouldve looked into that ...
this system is one of those old freepc things ...
cyrix proc, 32 meg ram, 4 meg video etc.
i assumed the new versions of these installs accepted just about every friggin config out there ...

what do you think ?

That can be a problem....
According to RH hardware compatibility list only the 6x86,
MediaGX and MII are supported....
is it any of these... if not that can be your problem...

But I would still check if the swap partition is being created...

Old redhat (5.2) worked just fine on the cyrix I used to own. That is probably not the problem. Chances are the problem is with the swap partition. Try making the swap partition around 64-96MB if you do another install.
