I am currently thinking about buying a new internal dvd drive with dvd read speeds of 16x. i was just wondering which brands and models are now considered to be 'good'. i want a drive with fairly high rip speeds for data and audio...any suggestions?

Thanks for all of your responses!

Toshiba or Pioneer
the Toshiba SD-M1502 has a "bug" when it will not allow you to rip the disk at more than x2. if you dont rip - no problem.
Pioneer has a tray and a slot load version. slot is kewl but also noisy and less reliable.
off course get the newer 106S (slot) or 116S (tray) and not their old 105/115 versions (also x16, but newer are better)

Toshiba is also cheaper.
I own a Toshiba x12 and very happy with it (has no "bug").
if you want to know, both have RPC-1 firmwares.

Ack, I was just about to purchase the SD-M1502, is this ripping bug applies to DVDs only? And do you know if they can fix this via a firmware upgrade?

definately the dvd-116 or the 106s by pioneer. the 106s is a slot loader so it looks cooler, but will run you an extra $10. both are the same drive but look different. these pioneers have the best DAE so go find it at www.storagereview.com if you want a review for it. later

I can vouch for the Pioneer 116 tray. I've got that drive, and it's great. Fast, reliable, not too loud. I only notice it really when spinning up a new disc.
