Help with Linksys WRT54GS

I have successfully installed a wireless connection to my new laptop. However, if I keep the router installed, the internet connection to my desktop does not connect. If I remove the wireless stuff the desktop works fine. I tried calling Linksys 24/7 tech support but I just get a busy signal. I have no knowledge of networking terms or any experience. I know my DSL modem has to be logged into (this might not be the correct term). It is a Speedstream 5100. If anybody has the patience, I sure could use your help. Thank you.
