I know there is a link on this website for basic networking and Linksys has some info but I am looking for better idreciotn or ideas on the easiest/best way to "correctly" set up my network. Currently I have a Cable Modem running to the Linksys Router BEFW11S4. Two desktops are hardwired and one laptop.

I could not get the computers to see each other unless I turned off the built in XP Firewall Protection....but I was told those ocmptuers are now vulnerable to access from anyone...but then again I thought the roiuter was protecting me but realized this one does not have a hardware firewall built in. With XP Firewall turned off I was still having problems getting computers to see each other and printers on network.

I am used to my network at the office with a server hooked to router (with hardware firewall). All Users are set up on server adn each uisers computer is set up with the same username/password.

I guess I see two options:

1. I am getting another laotop next week and am thinking about making my desktop the server hooked to the cable modem. Then hook the server to the router and install a fireall on the server. then all the comptuer hooked to the router would be protected.

2. Install Norton Internet Security on all computers, turn of XP Firewall and keep it hooked up as it is.

Any input/thougts would be helpful

Thanks

OK...

I have alaowed sharing on two computers and cna read each others one "shared" folder as well as print on a shared printer!!!

I just installed zone alarm on both computers adn added each others IP address to the Trusted Zone.

Does this sound OK/right? Think it is sufficient for basic home network?

If so, then when I get new laptop I will transfer desktop info to it, reload OD from scratch and make it a server/spare comptuer until I decide to sell, etc.

Any new thoughts?
