Help with Laptop Problems

My wife's laptop has had trouble booting for a few weeks. If it decides to boot, it takes 5-10 minutes to get to the logon screen. I tried chkdsk, but it looked like it was going to take about a week to finish. I tried to repair Windows (XP Pro) and it helped some. Now it at least boots, but it is unbearably slow. Does this seem like a hard drive issue? I'd like to be sure there's nothing else I should check before buying a new hard drive.
