The cabinets in my house have never been updated from the time the house was built in 1988. I live in South Florida and as far as I can tell my house has steel studs. From what I read online, this isn't good for mounting kitchen cabinets on. This is just my extremely novice opinion, but I believe that maybe, that this why the cabinets were originally installed to rest on a board mounted against wall. My plans, however, were to remove the board and install a nice decorative backsplash. I picked up a $50 zircon stud finder, but it's showing me 3 studs across the entire wall. What are my options now? Do I have to keep the board there to mount the new cabinets on?

Why do you think you have steel studs? Knock a hole in the wall behind a cabinet and check.

Do yourself a huge favor and scrape that trash popcorn of the ceiling while you're at it.
