I recently purchased a 32GB iPod touch and am new to the whole jailbreaking thing and installing 3rd party apps (I've never used Mac OS X, so I'm unfamiliar with the underlying file structure, trickery, etc.).

I understand the whole 1.1.4 jailbreaking process with ZiPhone for Windows. But after that, how do I go about installing apps? Do I need the installer.app?

Is installing an app an easy process or does it involve consoles and special commands? Are there any guides out there that can take a newb like me step by step from jailbreaking to installing apps?

Also, can you recommend a reputable site to get third party apps from?

Use ZiPhone on a Mac or PC. It will install a link to Zibri's blog, which I usually promptly delete, and an installer icon.

Click on the installer, then first install all the sources that you can under the Sources entry. And that's it. The sources will automatically give you everything that's available. I haven't heard of any that are disreputable... You probably won't need a guide - it's all very obvious... except the Sources part of it.

Should you want a guide, go to: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=674

Thanks, got everything installed!! :)

So my only other question is, if I ever need to go back to the original firmware, I just put the touch back into restore/recovery mode, then perform a restore back to 1.1.4 with iTunes... then proceed from there?

Yes, do a restore and it will erase everything back to factory settings. There's also a button to undo things on ZiPhone, if you trust it to do what it says it will.

On an iPhone to enter recovery mode, you hold the power and home buttons for about 30 seconds (it always takes longer than I think it should take) until the picture showing it needing to be plugged into a computer appears. But I haven't had any problems at all with jailbreaking an iPhone, and I've been jailbreaking them since Sept. last year. The only reason that I can think of for undoing the hack would be for warranty servicing.
