I need to run some cat5 cable along the outside of a building. i was looking at the outdoor rated cable and also considering using conduit with UTP. what do you think is best?

also, what else do i need? do i need a surge protector of some sort? and where would i put it?

i'm new at this. please give me as many details as possible.

thanks

i do recall the current thought is not to do it. THe conduit can act as a lightning rod, as can the cabling.

If you do not heed the warning, ground the conduit.

and surge protect both ends of the cable... so network 1 - surge - outside cable - surge - network 2.

its better if you could drill though the floor...

I have a regular UTP CAT 5 cable running on the outside of my house from one end to the other. It's been sitting there for about 2 years now, no problems at all (yes, I do have traffic running along it pretty much all of the time). It's set up in Minnesota, so you know it gets exposed to some pretty bad weather conditions, but no problems at all. I even stapled it to the side of the house (something not recommended by networking experts), and I still have no problems. The only thing I did to protect it was run it under a little overhang caused by the overlapping panels on the outside of my house. I think running any kind of condiut and then just putting UTP inside should be more than enough.
