Hi,

Hopefully I'll be getting the Visiontek 9800 Pro AGP graphics card later this week if JandR comes through with the deal. I've never installed a graphics card before and probably will need some help, so I'm asking early.

My setup: AMD 2600, Soyo SY-K7VME motherboard with on-board graphics, Windows XP SP2, 300 watt Antec power supply, 2 HDs, 2 burners(CD and DVD), 2 80mm Fans. I'm not an overclocker.

1. Will this card work on my MB? I looked at Schadenfroh's Guide to Video Cards (thanks) and I'm thinking it will. My MB manual says, "1x AGP master 4x/8x slot (1.5v only)". And at the ATI site it says, "RADEON 9800, AGP Specification 3.0, AGP Signaling 1.5V, 0.8V, AGP Speeds Supported 4X, 8X".

2. Will I need to install the AGP drivers before I disable the onboard graphics and installing the card? Or will that come on the driver CD? I didn't see this mentioned at Visiontek's site but I did read it in the ATI 9800 Pro manual. It said, "Install AGP Drivers for non-Intel Chipset Based Motherboards. An incorrect or missing GART driver can result in AGP memory not being detected or a black screen after Windows loads". I'm going to use the MS default drivers, via chipset info page.

3. I have a (cheap) 17" CRT, should I use the DVI-CRT connector?

4. How do I uninstall/disable the onboard graphics? I'm thinking uninstall the drivers for the display adapter in the Device Manager, then go into my BIOS(?) and disable the onboard graphics and free up the memory, then "exit and save the configuration"? Should I expect a black screen after my PC restarts? Or is there another way?

Wow, this was long-winded.

Thanks,

1C2C

use driver cleaner to unistall the drivers. install the ati drivers off of the website. that card will work in your mobo.
