Help with images in Internet Explorer

My friend just got his new Dell laptop today, an Inspiron 8500, and we're working on setting up everything to run well.

We noticed a problem with images that are loaded in internet explorer...it seems that it is doing some sort of automatic image compression that makes every single image in the browser appear as if it were an overly compressed JPEG...tons of artifacts all over the place. It's not just the way IE renders it either....it seems the computer is loading the images in that compressed form; if we set an image as background, it still shows up nasty on the desktop. I know it is only IE that is giving us images like this and not the whole computer, because I copied a nice high quality picture from my computer onto his and opened it up.

Any help? I've never seen anything like this before, and it really makes websites look like crap.

Not sure if I fully understand, but I *think* the problem may be that the photos are "auto-sizing" themselves. When IE autosizes an image to fit into the browser, it may appear to look distorted or whatever, because it is trying to "shrink" it down.

(I know, that was quite the craptastic explanation)

But try this to turn off auto-size, and see if it works.

Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced

(Scroll down to Multimedia, and uncheck "Enable Automatic Image Resizing")

Lemme know if this works.

No, it's not the automatic image resizing, but thanks for the suggestion. It does this to every single image on the page; any image that is loaded into the browser window shows up like that. For example, the banner ads and the Anandtech logo at the top of this page look as if they've been compressed past the point of sanity; artifacts in the white areas around the black text, for instance. I'm sure you're all familiar with the effects; standard JPEG compression artifacts. But on every single picture.

Have you tried toggling "Smart Image Dithering" under Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Multimedia?

Yeah, that's what I thought the problem was when I saw the setting....but it didn't seem to help any.

A few more possibilities:

1. Have you tried emptying your Temporary Internet Folders?
2. Have you tried viewing the webpages/images in other browsers?
3. Have you tried updating your video drivers?
